A sprinkler is the most common water distribution device in a landscape irrigation system

Watering your yard can feel like a daunting task, especially in the hot Arizona sun. But with a simple landscape irrigation system, you can keep your property lush and healthy without the hassle.

Whether you're new to gardening or just looking for a more efficient way to water, this guide will walk you through the basics of how a yard irrigation system works.

What is a Landscape Irrigation System?

A landscape irrigation system is a network of pipes, valves, and sprinklers that distribute water evenly across your lawn and garden. It automates the watering process, ensuring your plants get the right amount of water without you having to drag hoses around or remember to turn on the sprinkler.

How Does a Simple Irrigation System Work?

Let’s break down the components and how they work together:

  • Water Source: Your irrigation system starts with a water source, typically your home’s main water supply.

  • Controller: The controller, or timer, is the brain of your irrigation system. It allows you to set schedules for when and how long your system waters your yard. Modern controllers can be adjusted manually or via smartphone apps.

  • Valves: Valves control the flow of water to different zones of your yard. Each valve is connected to a zone, and the controller opens and closes these valves based on your watering schedule.

  • Pipes: Pipes carry water from the valves to the sprinklers and ensure water is delivered efficiently throughout your yard.

  • Sprinklers and drip emitters: Sprinklers and drip emitters distribute water to your plants. Sprinklers spray water over a large area, while drip emitters deliver water directly to the base of plants, reducing water waste.

Setting Up Your Irrigation System

Here’s a basic step-by-step outline of setting up a simple irrigation system:

  1. Plan your layout

  • Determine the different zones in your yard based on plant types and water needs, then sketch a layout of where you’ll place pipes, valves, and sprinklers.

  1. Install the controller

  • Choose a convenient location for the controller. It will need to be near a power source (most of the brands sold at the big box stores plug into a standard three-prong outlet) and your water supply.

  1. Lay the pipes

  • Dig trenches for the pipes and lay them according to your plan. Make sure they are deep enough (at least 8 inches) to avoid damage.

  1. Connect the valves

  • Install valves at each zone and connect them to the controller and the pipes.

  1. Attach sprinklers and emitters

  • Position sprinklers and emitters as planned, ensuring they cover your entire yard without overlapping too much.

  1. Test the system

  • Run the system to check for leaks and ensure even water distribution.
